Today’s post is something a little different. Although I don’t usually write film reviews on my blog, I really wanted to share this one with you.
“The Fundamentals of Caring” is a Netflix Original film which was recently recommended to me. It was released a couple of years ago, so apologies I’m a little late to the party!
Without giving too much away, the story follows a young guy called Trevor, who has Muscular Dystrophy. Trevor embarks on a road trip with his caregiver Ben (Paul Rudd) and hitchhiker love-interest (Selena Gomez).
The film really bought a smile to my face. I laughed, I cried, I laughed again – it really is one of those feel-good, easy-watch types.
For obvious reasons, I found certain parts of the film relatable. It makes a nice change for a disabled character to be represented in a humorous, positive light… rather than the general negativity portrayed in today’s media.
Don’t get me wrong, this film is far from a perfect representation of disability. One of my biggest pet peeves is when able-bodied actors are cast in disabled roles. Although they clearly did their research, it will never be a true representation.
Although I may not have Muscular Dystrophy myself, SMA comes under a similar umbrella and I am more than aware of the condition and it’s traits.
With that being said, I still loved it and would definitely recommend you check it out!
Overall, I would give this film a 4★ rating. I’ve since watched it for a second time and now class it as one of my faves.
Let me know if you’ve seen it… I’d love to hear your thoughts!
